Cariño inlet

Our circular route continues and our next stop is CARIÑO inlet. The old Cariño battery, which is in ruins nowadays, actually consisted of an old trench on the beach with two flanks of artillery pieces. Construction began in 1739 according to Vergel´s design and continued until 1762, with additional work by Hermosilla.

As a curious aside, it is worth noting that there is considerable evidence (as pieces of heavy artillery have been found) that in these waters, the wreck of the Invincible Armada´s biggest ship (La Ragazzona) might be found. It sunk in this area after a storm on 8 December 1588.
